Using math expressions
Math Expressions (i.e. mathematical operators), or formulae, can be employed in Items by using the Formula Editor. The Formula Editor allows you to use mathematical symbols to create LaTeX expressions containing mathematical operators.
1. Once you have created a new Item, select either the Math Entry or Extended Text interaction and drop it onto the Canvas.
You can also add math formulas to inline text blocks as context for a subsequent interaction with a response area.
The Formula Editor can be accessed either by selecting the pi icon (Insert Math Expression) from the word processing toolbar.

For more information on the Math Entry interaction, see Math Entry interaction. For more information on using the Extended Text interactions for math questions, see Extended text interaction.
2. Creating the formula
Once you click the Insert Math Expression button, a pi symbol will appear on the canvas where the formula will be placed.
The editor properties will appear on the right side of the canvas under Math Properties.
Under Display, select Inline for the equation to be inline with a question OR Block for the equation to display in a separate line from any text.
Under Editing Mode, select either LaTeX (recommended) or MathML.
If you select MathML, you will not be able to use the embedded formula editor. Use the large or small text boxes to paste your math formula.
The option to use the large or small editors to enter pre-written formulas will be also be available if LaTex is selected.
Under LaTex, select the editor (WYSIWYG or Wiris Math).
If Wiris MathType is enabled for your organization, Wiris Math will be the default editor.
A pop-up containing list mathematical symbols with an empty text field below will appear.

2. Click on the mathematical symbols you wish to use.
These will appear in the text field and can then be used in the writing of mathematical formulae, such as questions on geometry.
The Formula Editor only provides the possibility of entering mathematical symbols, but does not carry out any calculation.
Wiris MathType for test takers
The Wiris MathType editor described in this article can now also be enabled by an administrator for test takers to help them answer math questions.
If enabled, the Wiris editor will be available to test takers for any Extended Text interactions configured with rich text + math mode.
